LIFE IN KAJŽAR

Summary:
Haloze, Slovene countryside after the War: the new, so-called Communist authorities take away land (vineyards) from the Church and »kulaks« and start establishing cooperatives. On the initiative of his determined wife, Vračko the vinedresser who, during the War, first felt sympathy for the Germans but then liked the partisans better, moves into an emptied landlord's house, the owners of which fled the place along with the German occupiers. Other vinedressers confiscate the vineyard cottage which belonged to the Church, and have a party there. In comes Trinkhaus, the leading representative of the »reactionary forces« (the kulaks, the Church and the quislings), and tries to interrupt it. By some strange and unexplained coincidence this same Trinkhaus is appointed Commissioner of the village comunity. Thus authorized, Trinkhaus occupies the vineyard cottage but the villagers take action on the initiative of Vračko: they chase him out. As a consequence, Vračko must go and report to the district council authorities… After three days he comes back and informs the people that Trinkhaus is no longer Commissioner. Vračko summons the local vindressers for the purpose of establishing a cooperative, »the beginning of our new, better life«. Ornik, a former collaborator, would not be admitted to the membership. Nor would Lizika, also called Magdalene. Her lover, the village accordion player, dares not defend her in front of the comunity. Lizika, desperate, seeks refuge in the arms of Trinkhaus. Trinkhaus, together with Ornik and the babbling cellarman, are getting ready for an »armed rebellion«. But Vračko is lucky and before is too late seizes the weapons hidden in a barrel. Trinkhaus shoots at Lizika whom Vračko's wife wants to admit to the cooperative. The accordion player kills Trinkhaus in a fight, after which we see him bringing in the body of Lizika from the dark…
