Excursion for The Year of Srečko Kosovel
On 6th October, students from our third-year classes enjoyed a trip to the Karst region of Slovenia and Trieste in Italy. The excursion was linked to The Year of Srečko Kosovel, a project throughout 2026 which was established by the Slovenian government to mark a century since the death of this poet who left such an important legacy within national and world literature.
The day began in the village of Štanjel where they learned about the history of the settlement and enjoyed a chance to visit the Museum of the Slovenian Language and Books. Then, in the village of Tomaj, time at the Kosovel Family Homestead, the childhood home of the poet and where his cultural foundation can be found today, allowed the students to appreciate his work through readings and performances.
When the group moved on to Trieste, students spent time finding out about the rich history of the city and the role that Slovenians living abroad have played in so many ways over the years and through to the present day.The day ended with some free time for the students. For many, enjoying the local speciality ice creams and pastries in the autumn sunshine proved the perfect way to bring their excursion to a close.
We would like to thank the teachers from our school’s Slovene department for planning such a valuable trip which kept everyone entertained through the day while also giving the group plenty to think about in relation to both history and culture.
